Tribute to a Community Health Leader.

November 10, 2009

ladyj&misskrisYesterday, November 9th 2009, I went to a Home Going Celebration of  a Real Health  Leader in the Community.  Mr. George Edward “Butch Jamieson , was a leader for Health Issues in the Community.  He lead by being sober & Drug Free for 32 years in Washington, D.C..  I know how important this is because growing up in Pittsburgh, Pa.,  I saw how devestating drugs can be to a community.  I saw people try to kick the habit only to go back to the addiction.  I struggle with cigarrete smoking myself on a daily basis . However, this is about Butch. This is how Butch took his idea and put it  on Internet radio with a program called StreetMasters.  This also about how proud I am to have known this leader.  His catch phrase was God Loves You and So Do I!  Job well down Butch.

Herb is not just an Old School Name.

November 1, 2009

If You Can’t get the H1N1 Vaccine you might want to try an herbal blend that I can say is helping my family  stay away from the Swine Flu.  Especially since the vaccine is in such short supply.  Everyday we here more doses are being produced.  Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Seilbelius states that there will be 10 million doses made available by the middle of the week. We shall see.   In the mean time I have to promote herbal remedies.  I started going to my herbalist because of a need to find an alternative to sugar because of my diabetes.   Plus, because I am Old School, I can remember how Saccarin was  said to be a carcinogenic (Cancer Causing Agent) an ingredient in Sweet and Low,  and I now hear that Splenda has some of the same properties and ingredients that Sweet and Low had, I stay away from these sugar substitutes.   So I have discovered Stevia an herbal substitute for Sugar, and it’s great.   Thus, it s not a problem for me to try Tommy’s Pectoral with Stevia and a twist of lemon to help fight the H1N1 virus.  Check out Tommy’s herbs at Smile.  Mention this blog get free shipping anywhere.  Now I am not promoting this remedy as a replacement for the H1N1 Vaccine, but until the real thing comes along try this as a compliment to good parenting.

Wealth is Cooler than Health

October 26, 2009

Is it any wonder that the Breakfast food cereals that contribute the most to child-hood obesity have the most persuasive advertising?  I mean come on folks just how appealing is Quaker Oats oatmeal compared to Fruity Pebbles.    Now, I will admit that this new Quaker Oats commercial with the guy using Quaker Oats Oatmeal as a booster pack for a Jet Pack is pretty cool.  However I am not sure if the commercial is geared for kids.  As a matter of fact I know it isn’t I say let’s get Sponge Bob or Marley Sirrus  start promoting the real healthy cereals.   Not the infamous big green Check that is supposed to designate good health but  really represents  SOS ( same old s&$!)..Also, I never really saw a child buy his or her own cereal.    Flash…..This just in.  Spike Lee is right Taller Perry needs attitude check.  Tom Joyner, don’t forget your on morning drive when most of the kids are going to shcool.

Oh and by the way I am struggling with my diabetic levels.  Today was 332.

Can’t Please all the People All the time

October 17, 2009

I was watching Bill Maher last night on HBO.  I had to stop my son’s daily dose of WWV and which by the way Snoop is going to be on next week as was announced by my son, “SNOOP”.  oh okay.   Any how,  Bill Maher had 5 guys including my buddy,  Governor Martin O’Malley of the Great State of Maryland on his show(this is not including Congressman Grayson that everyone is calling this great new democratic leader again you can’t please all the people all the time, he made a comment about President Obama that kind of reminded me of the Saturday Evening Post Cover talking about it is just satire).  Bill Maher kept cutting off  the Governor whenever he had the chance to discuss the H1N1 vaccine.  We now know that Bill Maher blames vaccinations for his allergies he had when he was kid.  Humhh now that is something because I had allergies when I was kid too. However, now I don’t seem to have those same allergies now.  At least not as severe.  I remember having grass allergies  so severe that I had to get a shot in my eye.  Not in the pupil just below it.   OOOOOH, just thinking about it gives me the chills. However, I am here now blogging about it.  So Bill Maher, with your witless wit that seems to be a pattern for last shows of the season.  Sort of like a Cliffhanger vaccines could be considered building blocks to better health.  I believe you have to start evaluating the food you eat.  Checkout  my interview with Governor O’Malley on www.blogtalkradio.com/healthstream  or

Does the major corporations increase in wealth decrease the middle class?

October 10, 2009

I was watching the Bill Maher show today and I saw where his panel stated that international students come to the States to go to our excellent colleges and universities.  Get a great quality education and then go back to their own country.  Or just will not stay in this country.  Apparently the panel thought this is a new phenomenon.   That is probably true.  However, I believe now the big push to leave the United States by foreign students who were trained and studied here is the fact that there is so much outsourcing being done by United States Corporations the jobs have moved so why not move to where the jobs are.

So the question that we should ask these companies and our representatives is that because you (major corporation) have increased your wealth has it decreased our middle class?

Oh and I have not tested my blood sugar today so I can not report it. Check out my broadcast on www.blogtalkradio.com/healthstream

A Monumental Day in the Neighborhood

October 9, 2009

Today was a Monumental day in the neighborhood.  It started with NASA starting with its new Mantra, Colonizing the Moon.  Yes just like Blade Runner a Science Fiction Thriller from Hollywood and decades ago the first steps to Colonization was started today with a guided missile, the size of a SUV full of explosives was aimed at a Crater on the Moon to find out what kind of minerals are on the Moon and whether it can sustain life as we Humans know it.

However, that was not the half of it about an hour or 2 earlier it was announced that President Barak Obama just won the Nobel Peace Prize.  A surprise to everyone and he also won a million dollars to go along with it.

Although, the event that really floated my boat I was able to interview Governor O’Malley of the State of Maryland as he rolled out the first H1N1 Swine Flu Virus Vaccines at Dodge Park Elementary School in Landover, Maryland.  Now that was Cooler than the Gang.

The only downer today happened this morning when I tested my sugars it was up 264 ml.  Now that is down from 364 on Tuesday morning.  Yet not as good as Wednesday when I thought I was on my way when my level was a Great 180 ml just 40 units from my goal of 140 or below.  I am not in denial now I am in reform.   So check out the podcast for today and go to my Radio Program www.blogtalkradio.com/healthstream and catch the broadcast.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt

October 7, 2009

Recently, I went to my doctor’s office and was redirected in my priorities.  Now I have been diagnosed with Diabetes for the last 18 years.  Yes, ever since I was 35 years old.  However it was not until last week that I finally got It!

The week before I had blood work done. This is  to see how  my diabetes medicine may be affecting my kidneys and other organs.  I knew that my sugar level was not under control but since I was now taking insulin, I thought that I might be getting my levels to go down.    So I go to my doctor so that she can tell me how I am doing and to  make sure there is no hidden complications or developments.  She asked me how I was taking my meds and if I have been taking a reading everyday for my levels.  I told her that I did not take my medicine everyday.  I told her I drink a beer on occasion and that I was not taking a reading everyday because the numbers never went down.  At this point is where she let me have it.

She said Mr. Carter you are living in Denial.  Denial, you are a candidate for blindness and all sorts of bad things to happen within the next 10 years.  She continued by stating that if I do not do what she is prescribing I might as well just send a check in the mail to her and not even come in.  That is when I realized that Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

I started thinking about a guy that I used to work with that had diabetes.  I can remember how he used to brag about how he was going to party over the weekend.  I can also remember coming  back to work on a Tuesday after a 3 day weekend and finding out my friend had died from complications of drinking and Diabetes.  I also started thinking about my 14 year-old-son my 23-year-old Daughter and my Wife. Plus, how would the cope with me not around?

So I have made a commitment to myself to get out of denial and follow the rules of a diabetic in control of his sugar.    My goal is to bring my sugars down from the high 200 to as low as I can go.  I hope I can get it down to below 150.  I will add the number on a periodical basis to my blog.  If denial also is not just a river in Egypt for you for health issues or any other thing that needs for you to make a change in your lifestyle but you just cant seem to get it, Join me on my blog and let us make these changes together in the strategy of Each One Teach One.

Can we all just get some Health Care?

August 13, 2009

Whew, I tell you this debate over Health Care

is really getting heated.  Town Hall Meetings

turning into shouting matches, people being carted

off to jail.  I even saw an attendee that came

to the meeting with a nine milimeter straped

to his side.  All because the government wants

to reform health care so that a United States

Citizen can get health coverage eventhough

the citizen has a pre-condition, or  citizens

without health insurance can still be seen by

a health care provider without being turned

away.  Where were all these folks when we were

making a case of war to go into Irac

Why Do Black Males need a special health bailout

March 16, 2009

The health condition of  Citizens in the United States is an integral part of our nations economic recovery. It is very easy to see that stress is fueling alot of the health problems in the community.   High unemployment low balling on wages and the band plays on.  Plus in the minority community Black  Males for example have a 13 % unemployment rate compared to  the national White male average of 6.7 % .  Now also add that it has been discovered some of the nations largest banks have systematically placed higher interest rates on loans for Minorities (directly Black Males).  Is it any wonder that Black Males have the lowest life expectancy than any other population in America?    Yet the disparity that Black Males exhibit in developing and dying from chronic diseases (chronic defined by a disease that can be prevented) I contend is not because men (especially black men) are not going  to the doctor, but because Black Men suffer from stress more than any other group in this country.  Sure early detection is a factor for survival.  However I qualify that statement by looking at Bob Barker, the old host of the Price Is Right.  Who also had abundant resources and less stress than the average black man probably is observed by a Health Care Provider more than likely twice a month.    In the same token I saw  Les Brown. a motivtional speaker whose  most notable acheivement was that he was maried To superstar Gladys Knight ( from the fame R&B singing group Gladys Knight and the Pips) is a Prostate Cancer  survivor.  He had a revolutionary treatment that  essentialy cured ( for lack of a better term)  his prostate cancer He contends that he has health care that he pays $5000.00 dollars a month.  I guess my point is, is that if you are not stessed out by being oppressed or consistently discreminated against and have resources you are less lickely to get these chronic ailments or equally as important die form them .  What do you think?

Stimulus that will stop America from eroding from the Inside Out

February 2, 2009

The last presidential election, the Republicans

rallying cry  was Obama wants to distribute the

wealth.  President Obama’s victory shows that the

Country is yearning for this type of Change.

We are in need of major infrastructure mainte-

nance.  Yes the roads and bridges need repair,

however our social programs are in need of re-

pair.  I do not consider money to shore up edu-

tion on Sexually Transmitted Diseases that is on

rise unneeded.  It appears that our states are

operating on a deficit and cutting much

needed programs that support there populus.

For example there recently was a case were a 13

year old girl was reported missing and later found

dead.  After further investigation it was discov-

ered that the child was a foster child and that the

foster mother was being charged for the childs

death.  Last year in Washington D.C. there was a

fatal discovery of 4 young girls found dead in

a home.  This tragic event was only magnified

by the fact that this home was supposed to be

under investigation by a social agency because

the school reported that the children were

reported with scars and dishelved clothing

as well as reports of truancy from their

school.  There are many failures sited in this case

but the overwhelming failure had to do with bud-

get cuts and the addition of  another case to an

over-worked under staffed child welfare staff

in the District of Columbia.  This is a reality

throughout the country.  The sad thing about

this social errosion is that it has been going

 on for years.

Listen to the podcast associated with this

article and hear what is really going on

with our nations Foster Care  Program

and why the spending recommended in the

current stimulus bill should not be considered

Pork.  Chck out this podcast.
